In 2025, the FDD reports 141 franchised openings and 7 terminations, 15 company-owned openings, and 8 company clubs sold to franchisees. Transfers between franchisees fell to 71, from 270 in 2024.
The growth is steady, in a category where boutique fitness studios have been contracting.
What the pipeline shows
At the end of 2025, 86 franchise agreements were signed but not yet open. Planet Fitness projects 57 new clubs (53 franchised, 4 company-owned) in 2026, down from 87 projected a year earlier. The FDD bases those projections on signed leases, so they reflect sites already secured rather than total demand.
What Item 19 shows
Item 19 reports 2025 EFT revenue, the recurring monthly and annual membership dues that royalties are charged on, for clubs open all of 2025, split into thirds.
| Franchised clubs | Clubs | Average | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom third | 764 | $1,260,539 | $1,311,575 | $429,581 to $1,596,261 |
| Middle third | 764 | $1,873,231 | $1,863,300 | $1,597,497 to $2,170,135 |
| Upper third | 763 | $2,705,811 | $2,595,549 | $2,171,673 to $5,271,381 |

The FDD also includes a revenue and operations statement, but only for 262 company-owned clubs. Their average EBITDA ran from $280,839 in the bottom third to $1,104,804 in the upper third. That figure excludes taxes, depreciation, debt service, capital reserves, and equipment financing, and it is not franchisee data.
What it costs
Item 7 estimates $1,282,500 to $3,769,000 if you finance equipment, or $2,385,000 to $5,386,000 if you buy it. The prior FDD's financed range was $1,525,000 to $3,706,700. The initial franchise fee doubled to $40,000. Item 6 sets the royalty at 7% of membership dues, a national advertising fund contribution, and local advertising of the greater of $60,000 or 7% of monthly dues. Clubs are required to remodel every 12 years (estimated at $250,000 to $1,200,000) and replace cardio equipment every six years.
Questions to bring to the franchisor
- What EFT revenue do franchised clubs in my market fall into, by third?
- What is the franchisee-level equivalent of the company-owned EBITDA statement?
- What remodel and equipment replacement costs fall within my term?
- Why did projected openings decline from 87 to 57?
The point
Planet Fitness is growing at a steady 5% to 6% a year. The FDD shows club-level revenue for franchisees, while its profit data covers company-owned clubs only, so that is the question to bring to current owners.
